19th July 2025: 1Z60 Birmingham New Street to Scarborough at York with 'The White Rose' & '5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe'.

I wanted to see 5043 at Scarborough, but as it was pouring down with rain over south and east Yorkshire, I opted to stay under cover at York. The train that I would've caught at York to Scarborough arrived at platform 4, a couple of minutes after '5043', hence, the platform change to 5 for '5043'. So I'd get to Scarborough a few minutes ahead of the steam loco. Better to stay at York under cover!

Looking south from platform 4 from where 'Earl of Edgcumbe' will appear.

This will be the second sighting of this Castle Class steam locomotive, last years' not being a particulary good one! This time, I have a much better vantage view.

'5043' comes to a halt at platform 5.

Mk1 General Utility Van (GUV W96100)

Since I purchased my 00-gauge General Utility Van, I have been taking a very strong interest as to where these are placed within the consist. All the Mk1 coaches are from the pre-Nationalisation era of the GWR. I spotted a Mk1 Dining coach 'Eagle' which I once owned in 00-gauge.

5043 pulls away from York for Scarborough.

Bringing-up the rear is a class 37, no. 240.

26th JUNE 2025: 1Z15 - THE SCARBOROUGH SPA EXPRESS at YORK with 60103 'TORNADO'.

This is the first of 'The Scarborough Express' excursions this season. I was in deep thought as to whether to just stop-off at York or travel on to Scarborough. In the event, I opted for York. Next time, I shall go to Scarborough and take in some of the sights.

Waited for 60103 to approach the platform which would be awkward, as from my location on P5, I would get a good view as it came in but it would continue around the curve to the end of P4 on thde line to Scarborough.

Fortunately, this did present to me some good views of the Mk1 coaches being hauled by Tornado, with a little help from 57314.

As usual, York is a very busy station with trains passing through, stopping and moving off to yield oporunist photo snaps.

Another interesting and pleasing day at York. Scarborough next time!

21st JUNE 2025: KEIGHLEY & WORTH VALLEY DIESEL GALA.

Another early start for me as I was going to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway for a day out experiencing a day of diesel locomotives along with wagons and Mark 1 coaching stock.  This would be my first visit to a Heritage railway, so was unsure what to expect.

Already the weather was warm and it would get warmer as the day progressed! There was certainly a large crowd there, even at this time (10am) in the morning!

At P3, Class 14 & Class 20 with a rake of Mark 1 Coaches head out from Keighley.

The above 5 photos show the view from a Mk1 coach as we travelled along the line.

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR) heritage railway has a single 5-mile line, with passing lines, from Keighley to Oxenhope and is located adjacent to Keighley BR Station.

After looking around, I boarded a Mk1 coach being hauled by a HST unit 43484 in grey livery.

On show were various diesel locomotives, Mk1 coaching stock and various wagons and tankers. I also had a jouney behind a class 47 diesel, 47714. It was a great day out and a shame that I didn't spend more time there.

I have promised myself to visit in 2026 for the Steam Gala.

  • D0226 Experimental Prototype English Electric Diesel Shunter ‘Vulcan’
  • Class 37 (Colas Rail) – A modern-day icon best known for working Network Rail’s test trains. It’s set to arrive on Friday and will be running over the weekend.
  • Class 47 No. 47714 – Visiting from the Wensleydale Railway, this loco adds some classic Type 4 grunt to the event.
  • Class 55 No. 55009 ‘Alycidon’ – A proper showstopper! One of the legendary Deltics, famous for their speed and sound. Not to be missed.
  • Class 50 No. 50021 ‘Rodney’ – Another fan favourite, bringing big loco vibes and plenty of power. ‘Watcha Dave’
  • Class 47 No. 47715 – Another Brush Type 4 joins the party, giving double the 47 action for Type 4 fans!
