18thNOVEMBER 2023 - THREE STEAM LOCOS AT YORK RAIL STATION DURING A FRENTIC 84 MINUTES!

Today, I and all the hordes of 'Rail Enthusiasts', were in for a treat. Not one, but three steam locomotives, complete with trains were to call at York station with three 'Christmas Market' specials to converge on the city of York's Christmas Markets.

1Z68: 46115 Scots Guardsman

First to arrive at platform 5 was 46115 Scots Guardsman from Carlisle.

The train had set off from Carlisle at 08:07hrs, to arrive at York for 12:06hrs. As expected a good sizable crowd in attendance. I had to push and jostle to get some pics. Some minutes later, Scots Guardsman reversed out of platform 5 pulled by diesel loco 47804 to Holgate sidings.

47804 was the tail-loco of this train.

...and past platform 11 to the sidings.

Once Scots Guardsman had gone, it was time to trek over to platform 9 to get a prime position for the next steam loco... Stanier Black 5 No.44871.

Whilst on the platform, taking photos of  802s and 185s, I received a tap on my shoulder. I turned round and who should I see, but an old colleague from my working day with the railway industry! He like me is retired now and he too spends some of his time chasing steam locos. We decided to stay here on platform 9 to view 44871, as there we would get a decent view as it came in and then out. Unfortunately, the loco was to reverse out to the sidings. Steve decided to 'leg-it' down the station platform to watch 44871 reversing out. I started but at that same moment,  45231, Sherwood Forester came in, so I stayed put to watch 45231 roll in.

Another Stanier Black 5! Surprisingly, the platform wasn't too crowded, as most had departed to the other end of the platform to watch the other Black 5, 44871 reverse to the sidings, but that would change, the closer the time got to 45231's arrival. I wouldn't see my mate again until I boarded my train home.

45231 Sherwood Forrester pulls into York at 13:34hrs.
