Designed by William Stanier, the Black 5, 44871 was built at Crewe Works in March 1945 and withdrawn from BR service in 1968, at the end of steam. Today it was hauling a rake of Mark 1 coaches from London Kings Cross to York with a class 47 at the tail. Didn't get the number. I had decided to see it at Doncaster rather than York. It was not scheduled to stop here but pass at slow speed past platform 8.
